Auto-suspend
Auto-suspend is off by default on new machines (they stay up and cost at most the monthly cap). Turn it on at creation or later on the machine page.
When a machine suspends
Section titled “When a machine suspends”Once on, a machine suspends after 20 minutes (configurable) of all three at once:
- no established connections (in or out — e.g. SSH sessions, Claude Code’s connection to the model);
- a nearly idle CPU;
- almost no network traffic.
If any one fails, it stays up; missing data counts as “in use”.
What happens while suspended
Section titled “What happens while suspended”The machine’s memory is written to the encrypted disk, the physical RAM goes back to the server and the encryption key leaves memory. While suspended you pay only the base fee, no hourly fee.
Waking it
Section titled “Waking it”Just SSH in or hit a mapped port: when the connection arrives we start the machine in the background and forward it — about 10 extra seconds. Processes, open files and in-memory data are all still there.
You can also suspend immediately from inside the machine: hangar hibernate.
