Versions and updates

The pre-installed Claude Code follows the platform-approved version: each new version passes our compatibility check before it is rolled out to every machine.

  • Machines check every 3 hours and update automatically when they differ from the approved version.
  • No restart, no interrupted work: a running claude keeps the old version; the next start uses the new one.
  • Every update is recorded in the console’s activity log, with the from and to versions.
  • The Claude Code version row on the machine page shows the pre-installed version, the version you actually run, and whether auto-update is on.

On the machine:

Terminal window
hangar claude-update
Terminal window
sudo hangar claude-update off # stay on the current version
sudo hangar claude-update on # turn it back on
sudo hangar claude-update now # check right away

Install Claude Code into your own home directory (~/.local/bin) with the native install described in Claude Code’s official docs. Running claude then uses your copy first, and it updates itself; the platform’s auto-update never touches it.
